The new poster girl for anti WRB campaigners?

The person in question is a lady Congress MLC from Bihar. In spite of my best efforts, I couldn’t find any picture of her (in action) on the site that I could post here for added reference. Will do, when I get my hands on them.

The term ‘WRB’ stands for Women’s Reservation Bill, the thingy that, when/if passed, would set aside 33% seats for women in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Panchayat and just about every other legislative body in India. Scary thought. If, with just 17% representation, women could unleash such violence, imagine what it would be like if one out of every three members of the Indian legislative bodies is a woman.

For as long as I remember, I had been an ardent opposer of Women’s Rights Bill (Why do I see a wiggly red line under the word 'opposer' in my MS Word screen? Isn’t that a word?). All those who claim that women are the weaker gender haven’t seen this lady hurl the flowerpots and throw them at the mediapersons and security personnel.

There was a similar flower pot throwing incident in one of those PG Wodehouse stories. Can't remember the names of the characters or the story. If my dogs haven’t ripped that book apart, I’m going to read it again.

Back to WRB and all those laws that are meant to protect and impose equality on women. There is one big problem with such measures. The women who desperately need the help of these laws seldom benefit from it. The woman who silently suffers physical abuse at the hands of her husband would continue to do so no matter how favourable the judiciary and police system is.

Most often than not, the ones who make the most of it would have found their way out of their personal mess even without it. The third category- the ones who exploit it, are just as good at it.

Now, getting back to Jyoti Singh, let me confess- I have never seen even male MLAs go this berserk. And, I really hope those de-potted plants are rehabilitated someplace safe and away from brutality.
